Security Upgrades
- Screen Locks. After fifteen minutes of inactivity computers are automatically set to a locked status and the logged on user’s password is needed to unlock the system.
- Forced Password Change. Starting October 1st a new password policy will take place. CVTC students, faculty, and staff will be prompted to change their password and then prompted to change it every 120 days thereafter.
Full Disk Encryption. This security measure encrypts everything on a hard drive so that if the computer is stolen and the hard drive is removed and inserted into another computer, the data will remain secure.
- Kensington Locks. Locks will be provided for all CVTC laptops. These locks should be used to secure laptops anytime they are left unattended. This security measure will greatly reduce the threat of a laptop being stolen.
- Stop Tags. An additional laptop security measure will be the placement of stop tags on all CVTC owned laptops. These devices deter theft in three main ways:
- They permanently tattoo CVTC information on the equipment which will provide unmistakable proof that equipment is police traceable and/or stolen.
- Stop tags link your lost equipment to a master database so CVTC can track its location.
- Should it be necessary, I.T. can remotely disable the computer so the information on a computer’s hard drive can be remotely wiped if it is stolen and there is risk of compromising data on it.
- Personally Identifiable Information. More than ever it is critical to protect personally identifiable information such as a social security number. This information should not be stored on local computers and training will be offered this fall to help CVTC faculty and staff learn the policies and procedures associated with this risk.
