IP Phone

Phones

CVTC uses Cisco IP Phones coupled with a Voice Over IP technology that delivers voice using the Internet. In general, this means sending voice information in digital form rather than in the dedicated circuit-switched connections of the traditional telephone network. A major advantage of using this new technology is that it avoids the tolls charged by ordinary telephone service.

Other Resources

We have reviewed phones available from some of the wireless providers in our area and the security configuration of the email system. Based on that information, below are the recommended phones.
Wireless Provider Smart Phone
AT&T AT&T Tilt, Palm Treo 750w
Sprint HTC Touch, Palm Treo 800w
Alltel HTC Touch

Please note the fact that Alltel does not have a Palm Treo that runs Windows Mobile 6.

Additional Notes

  • Make sure you purchase an unlimited data or "smartphone" plan.
  • You’ll need to make sure the following is completed prior to syncing to CVTC’s Email, Calendaring, and Contact system.
    • The phone is activated by the service provider.
    • The time zone is set properly on the device.

Phones Not on the Recommended List

Should you prefer to purchase a phone model not on the recommended list, you will need to keep the following items in mind:

  • The CVTC system is only compatible with devices using Windows Mobile 6 with Exchange ActiveSync
  • The minimum requirement is Exchange ActiveSync for Email and Calendaring, and “wildcard” SSL Certificate support. The specific phone model recommended is highly dependent on what you will be using it for.
  • Note that Exchange Activesync allows system administrators to completely erase a device if it becomes compromised (lost/stolen).
  • Note that Blackberry devices currently do not support synchronizing calendar or contact. The BlackBerry Internet Service does not support a Microsoft Outlook Web Access source using a Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server which is the security practice CVTC has implemented. Blackberry devices can be used for receiving CVTC email by getting a blackberry email address from your provider and submitting a help desk case to have your CVTC email sent to your Blackberry email address.
